If you’re moving out to the Bay Area for the first time, you might not be ready to sign a long-term lease or purchase a piece of property quite yet. Still, searching for short term housing in the Bay Area is daunting. Housing options for interns is different than housing options for consultants. With a constant influx of tech interns and recent graduates headed to the Silicon Valley for work, the temporary housing marketing is booming. Getting a sublet, short-term or temporary housing unit is a viable option, and luckily, there are lots of websites out there that can help you in your search before you even arrive to the area. Maybe someone should make a list? See below.
Airbnb.com - For super temporary, like a month or less, try airbnb.com. It’s basically like a by-owner hotel website. So instead of the searching, and getting stuck at the Holiday Inn next to the airport while you start your Facebook internship, you can stay in an inexpensive, yet nice Menlo Park micro-loft for a few weeks until you figure things out.
Sublet.com – Nothing fancy about sublet.com, but super functional and simple to use. Guess what they have on there? Sublets.
HomeAway - Like Airbnb, HomeAway is a by-owner rental site with pricing options by night, by week or by month. You can filter by property type, location type, features and tons of other filters. So if you’re looking specifically for a cottage near the beach that will allow you to bring Fido it’s easy to find your dream cottage here.
Homesuite - Searching for short term housing in the Bay Area ends here. Although we should clarify: "short-term housing" is tecnically less than 30 days, which is the target of lots of local legislation. Homesuite only offers monthly stays of 30 days or longer, so we're not technically short-term housing. If you’re looking for something a little longer, somewhere around one to three months, reach out to us for a hassle-free housing experience. Our inventory is vetted by Your Homesuite personnel and our search is customized for each individual.
A few last minute tips:
Also, try searching outside of “vacation” rentals, and more towards “temporary housing” (or “apartment”) “sublets”, etc. The “vacation” tag tends to add more to the price listed. If you do opt to go with a vacation rental, try one of these websites: vrbo.com, cyberrentals.com, homeaway.com, roomorama.com and buenavistarentals.com (based in San Francisco).
