Quick Tips for Selecting a Relocation Company

By Zachary Foisie

Moving - finding a relocation company

Selecting a relocation company might feel like an unnecessary spend, especially if you are young and perfectly capable of moving everything on your own. However, removing or minimizing the stress involved during the move is one major advantage and can relieve a lot of pressure from off your shoulders, allowing you to focus on other important things like getting settled in your new city or preparing for your new job. Here are a few quick tips for selecting a relocation company:

Don’t shop based on price – You get what you pay for, and the cheapest services will also likely be the lowest quality services.

Check for bonds & insurance – Make sure the relocation company is insured and bonded, especially if you have some fragile and/or valuable belongings that are seemingly irreplaceable for either monetary or sentimental reasons. Good insurance policies will relieve some tension as you watch the movers toss your belongings around like hot potatoes.

Hire trained professionals – Professionals are trained on everything from taking inventory to packing items correctly, safely and efficiently to friendly customer service.

Ask if they have proper equipment – Make sure they are equipped to handle everything you need them too, including extra-large or extra-heavy items. If you’re moving long distance, how are they shipping your stuff? What are the delivery dates?

Talk to a real person before agreeing to any estimate – Websites will tell most of the story, but not all of it. You can obtain a general quote from the website, but make sure you talk to a real life human being on the phone or in person before you sign any sort of estimate. It will give you the chance to ask the questions you should be asking. You'll avoid any hidden fees and might also score a deal if you talk to a real person.

Schedule an in-home assessment – It’s wise to schedule an appointment for them to come size up your move in advance, and will likely yield a much more accurate price estimate. Any company that doesn’t take them time to come and assess your inventory isn’t worth the trouble. Taking accurate inventory can be a good way to keep everyone on the same page and accountable, and the good honest companies know this.

Know what services they offer – If you’re using a relocation company, then you are likely moving a long distance away. Many relocation companies will offer services to help you get acclimated to your new destination. It’s worth asking about.

Check to see if they have offices in your new city – You may have to deal with a third party when in the new city, which is not all that uncommon, but nonetheless can be a little misleading and surprising. If you are moving from a big city to another big city, it may be wise to use a company with locations in both cities.

Research company reviews – Once you’ve decided on a company to use, one of the final things you should do is check online for any complaints or negative reviews. If the bad reviews outweigh the good, or reveal some alarming trends, then you should think about hiring another relocation company.
